DANCE ALL NIGHT – THE HIGHWOODS STRINGBAND STORY (2018)
In the 1970s, the Highwoods Stringband’s unique blend of musical brilliance, exuberance, sparkling wit, and eclectic repertoire introduced tens of thousands of delighted listeners to traditional old-time music. The Grammy-nominated band traveled extensively, playing major folk festivals across the U.S. and touring in Latin America and Europe, and released three albums on Rounder Records. The band also inspired countless other musicians and their influence on the music can still be heard today. Blending rare performance footage, photographs, sound recordings, and interviews, this colorful film aptly captures the spirit of the time and the joy and excitement generated by the band.
DANCE TO THE MUSIC AND LISTEN TO THE CALLS (1987)
Larry Edelman produced this video in 1987 while studying square dance calling with Jerry Goodwin. The apprenticeship was supported by a grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. Recorded at the Prosperity Fire Hall in western Pennsylvania the video features Jerry Goodwin calling with the Mountain Express (Chuck Monticello, fiddle; Joe Frye, guitar; Bob Hill, piano; and Dodie Goodwin, bass).
EVA NUANEZ: MEMORIES OF MY MUSICAL LIFE (2015)
Eva was born in 1921 in Berwind, Colorado. A coal miner’s daughter, she grew up without formal musical training. She taught herself how to play the violin by ear, playing and singing the traditional tunes and songs that were so familiar to her family. By 1949, Eva was playing professionally. Whether singing popular songs in both Spanish and English or playing the traditional Hispanic music that her family had played for generations, music was always central to her life. Eva passed away in 2018 at the age of 97.
COUPLES DANCES AT SQUARE DANCES IN SOUTHWESTERN PENNSYLVANIA (2016)
This video illustrates some of the most common couples dances played and danced at a typical evening of square dancing in the 1980’s in rural southwestern Pennsylvania. The dances include schottisches, polkas, two-steps, fox-trots, waltzes, and two dances not commonly seen elsewhere, The Peerless and The Rye Waltz. Also included are a couple examples of cakewalks.
